SONORA, Calif., August 9, 2022-- Visit Tuolumne County (VTC) hosted their first Clean Up Day of the year at Pinecrest Lake on Friday July 29th, 2022. The goal was to help remove trash that is left behind on the beach, paths, and picnic areas as this is a great concern to residents and visitors. Pinecrest is a very popular summer destination loved by locals and visitors. VTC wants to help preserve it for generations to come.
“While cleaning up we had a lot of people mention microplastics and we realized quickly that this is a huge part of the trash we would be collecting. So many people walked by thanking us for our efforts and we hope we inspired others to be a little more conscientious when it comes to stashing their trash,” stated Lisa Mayo, President & CEO of Visit Tuolumne County.
The primary trash found were little pieces that seemed to have been left by accident. Corners ripped off of bags, plastic straw wrappers, twist ties, and bottle tops were most frequently found as well as cigarette butts clearly disposed of incorrectly. VTC asks that locals and visitors do their part to collect these little pieces that add up, into multiple full trash bags.
As part of sustainability initiatives, VTC will continue to host Clean Up Days throughout Tuolumne County. Have an area that you would like to see the VTC Team organize a Clean Up Day at? Please reach out to Sarah Spoljaric at Sarah@GoTuolumne.com.
